The Purpose of Parables
Matthew 13:10-17, 34-35

Why did Jesus choose to teach in parables?

 In a general sense,

  1. The use of parables in teaching was common in those days.
  2. The desired truth was easier to remember when using a parable.
  3. The listener could easily relate to the characters in a parable.
  4. The parable was effective in altering behavior or thought.

In a spiritual sense, Jesus used parables because:

  1. The truth needed to be told, but people would reject it.
  2. The truth was essential, but people wanted the sensational.

How Jesus justifies His decision :

  1. New truth builds on the acceptance of previous truth. (12)
  2. It is futile to teach people who do not want to learn. (13-14)
